As we become older, it's normal for our social groups to get smaller.
Retirement, changes in mobility, or the death of a spouse can cause people to be alone for long periods of time. These times of being alone can be more than merely “lonely”; they can have a serious effect on mental and physical health.
We at Avon Park Care Home think that moving into a care home shouldn’t signal the end of your social life; it should be the start of a new community. This is why staying active and connected is the key to ageing well.
The Health Benefits of Being Social
Research suggests that elders need to be socially active just as much as they need to exercise. It has been shown that talking to friends on a regular basis:
Improve your brain health: Talking to people and learning new things, including how to cook or paint, can help keep your mind bright.
Improve your emotional health: Having a “reason to get up” and somebody to laugh with lowers your chances of depression and anxiety by a lot.
Physical Resilience: Believe it or not, seniors who are socially involved are more likely to be active and recover from illness faster than those who are alone.
How Avon Park Helps People Get Together
We don’t think that entertainment should be the same for everyone. Our activity coordinators work hard to make sure that there is something for everyone:
The Creative Soul:
Our residents can show off their skills and express themselves in our art and cooking classes.
The Social Butterfly:
Our ‘Drinks Trolley’ and pub lunches in the region are quite popular since they make it easy to relax and catch up with friends.
The Local Explorer:
We take use of our location on the border between Southampton and Portsmouth by going shopping and walking in the surrounding nature reserves and along the seafront.
The Quiet Contemplator:
Our lounge is a tranquil place for a puzzle, a book, or a quiet talk over a cup of tea for people who like smaller groups.
A House Without Walls
Being “cut off” from the world can make you feel lonely. We have an open-door policy at Avon Park. We invite family and friends to come by whenever they want, with no limits or requirement for an appointment. Families are an important part of our community, whether they are having lunch with a loved one or going to one of our festivities.
